Koh Phangan Box Jellyfish Alert

Chalok Lam Bay in the north of Koh Phangan, Thailand has had an alarming increase in dangerous box jellyfish sightings over September, 2018. Thailand's Department of Marine & Coastal Resources has as a result issued a warning to avoid swimming anywhere in the bay until further notice.

For almost 10 years, OceanLine - the Phuket-based importer and distributor of Safe Sea Sunscreen with Jellyfish Sting Protection - has been claiming that this product is effective in preventing stings from jellyfish. In one breath they say it "protects the skin against jellyfish stings" and in the other it "helps protect against most jellyfish". Well, which is it? All or most?

3 Children Dead - Philippines Box Jellyfish Shock & Shame

Three young children in the space of only four weeks have sadly died in the Philippines from box jellyfish stings. Local media reported that the tragedies occurred in areas known to have box jellyfish. There were no warning signs, no available vinegar, no emergency procedures. No-one knew what to do.

Back to Langkawi. It's been a while. Four years ago, this blog wrote about a young girl stung by a box jellyfish on Tanjung Rhu. It appeared she suffered some kind of Irukandji syndrome from the sting of a box jellyfish ( Read our 2014 story ). Sadly, this time the news is significantly worse as a man has lost his life. It appears as though the culprit was a big, deadly box jellyfish.

Vietnam has 3,260 kilometres of coastline and can lay claim to having some of the region's most beautiful beaches, notably the idyllic tropical paradise of Phu Quoc. Lying closer to the Cambodian mainland than its Socialist Motherland, Phu Quoc is a haven for travellers. But this Gulf of Thailand island, as appears to be the case, also has its share of jellyfish.

Tracking Thailand's progress over a 10-year period since the Kingdom officially acknowledged their box jellyfish problem could be compared to a trek to Mae Hong Son. It's been a slow ascent. They've been plenty of challenges, obstacles, slips and step-by-step successes. And after climbing hill after hill it is clear that there's still a long way to go.
